A bedroom looks like the calmest electrical room in the house. No water, no big motors, nothing dramatic plugged in. But it is the room you sleep in, which means it is the one room where a fault can smoulder for an hour with nobody awake to notice. That single fact shapes how a bedroom should be wired, and it is why the most important piece of protection in there is one most people have never heard of.
AFCI: the protection that watches while you sleep
The defining rule for a bedroom is AFCI protection. An AFCI, an arc-fault circuit interrupter, watches for the erratic sparking that a damaged cord, a pinched wire or a loose connection makes, and shuts the circuit off before that arcing can start a fire. An ordinary breaker only trips on a big overload or a dead short. It will happily sit there while a frayed lamp cord under the bed quietly arcs against the bed frame, which is exactly the kind of small, slow fault that starts fires at night.
That is why the outlets and lighting in bedrooms are meant to be on AFCI-protected circuits. A lamp cord crushed under a castor, an old extension lead run beneath the mattress, a phone charger with a nicked cable: these are the everyday things AFCI is built to catch, in the room where catching them early matters most.
Enough outlets, in the right places
The other half of a safe bedroom is just having enough outlets. The standard is that no point along a wall sits more than 6 feet from an outlet, which works out to outlets no more than 12 feet apart, and any usable wall wider than about 2 feet gets one. It sounds fussy until you see why it exists: when there are too few outlets, people reach for extension leads and power strips, and those daisy-chained cords running under rugs and behind headboards are a genuine fire risk.
Think about how a bedroom is actually used now. A lamp and a phone charger each side of the bed, a fan, a TV, maybe a games console or a laptop. An older bedroom built with one or two outlets was never meant to carry that, and the gap gets filled with extension cords. The fix is outlets where you need them, so nothing has to be stretched across the floor.
Tamper-resistant outlets and a switch you can reach
Two smaller things round out a good bedroom. New outlets should be tamper-resistant, meaning they have internal shutters that stop a child pushing something into the slots, which matters in a child’s room especially. And the room should have a proper switched light, ideally a switch by the door so you are not crossing a dark room to a lamp, or a switched outlet that controls a bedside lamp from the wall.
The bedroom air conditioner
Here is the one that bites people in Jamaica. A bedroom air conditioner, whether a window unit or a split, is a heavy continuous load, and it should not be sharing an ordinary bedroom outlet with the lamp and the TV. A window unit pushed onto a circuit already running everything else is a classic cause of a warm outlet, a tripping breaker, or worse. A split system is wired on its own dedicated circuit as a matter of course. Why this matters here, and the inspection
Plenty of Jamaican bedrooms were wired years ago with a couple of outlets and a ceiling light, for a room that now holds a fan, an AC unit, a TV and three things on charge. The mismatch shows up as extension leads everywhere and the odd warm plug. Who should do it
Adding circuits, fitting AFCI protection and running a dedicated line for an AC unit are licensed-electrician work, for your safety and so the job passes inspection. What you can do is read the warning signs: extension leads doing permanent jobs, a single outlet feeding a power strip feeding everything, a window AC on the same circuit as the rest of the room, or any plug that feels warm.
