A bathroom is the smallest room in the house, and electrically it is the most dangerous. Everything that makes electricity hazardous is in there at once: water, wet floors, bare skin, and in a lot of Jamaican homes an electric shower heater drawing serious current a few inches from where you stand. Get the wiring right and none of that is a problem. Get it wrong and the bathroom is the room most likely to hurt someone. Here is how it should be done.
GFCI on every outlet, no exceptions
If you take away one thing, take this: every receptacle in a bathroom must be GFCI protected. Not just the one nearest the sink. Every one. A GFCI watches for current leaking to ground, the kind of leak that happens when electricity finds a path through water or through a person, and it cuts the power in a fraction of a second, fast enough to turn a fatal shock into a scare. In a room where you stand wet and barefoot, that protection is the difference between a hairdryer fault being a tripped outlet and being a tragedy. There is no situation where a bathroom outlet should be on an ordinary circuit without it.
The circuit and where the outlets go
A bathroom should be fed by at least one dedicated 20-amp circuit for its receptacles, and there should be an outlet within about 3 feet of each sink, so the hairdryer and the shaver are not reaching across the room on a trailing cord. If that circuit serves only the one bathroom, it can also run that bathroom’s light and fan; if it serves outlets in more than one bathroom, it should do only that.
There is also a sensible limit on placement. An outlet should not sit more than about 12 inches below the top of the basin, and it should never be mounted face-up on the counter where water pools straight into it.
Keep outlets and switches away from the tub and shower
This is where the layout rules earn their keep. Outlets are kept out of a zone around the bath and shower, roughly 3 feet to the side and 8 feet up from the tub rim or shower threshold, so there is no plug within reach of someone standing in the water. Switches follow the same thinking: you should not be able to touch a light switch while you are in the tub or shower. The whole idea is that nothing you can reach with a wet hand carries the kind of power that hurts.
Lights and the fan
Light fixtures over or near a shower have to be built for the damp. A fixture above the shower should be rated for damp locations at least, and for wet locations if it catches the spray directly, which in practice means a sealed, enclosed fitting rather than an open bulb sitting in the steam. An open lampholder over a shower is a classic bad install.
The extractor fan matters more here than the rules alone suggest, because of our climate. A bathroom that cannot vent its steam stays damp, and constant damp corrodes connections, rusts fittings and feeds the mould that gets into everything. A good fan, vented outside rather than just into the ceiling void, protects the wiring as much as the paint.
The electric shower heater, the big one in Jamaica
Many Jamaican bathrooms run an electric instant shower heater, and it deserves its own paragraph because it is the single most demanding and most exposed piece of electrics in the house. It is a high-draw heating appliance, mounted in the wettest spot you have, operated by someone soaking wet. An electric shower like that has to be on its own correctly sized circuit, properly grounded, and protected, and it is absolutely not a casual DIY job. We have seen them wired with undersized cable, no proper ground, and connections that have no business being near water. If you have one, or you are putting one in, it is worth having the circuit checked by someone who treats it with the respect it needs.
Why this matters more here, and the inspection
Two things make bathroom wiring worth getting right in Jamaica. The humidity is relentless, so anything not sealed and rated for damp degrades faster than it would in a drier climate. And the electric shower heater puts real power in the worst possible place, so there is no room for a casual job. New or rewired bathroom circuits should also be done to standard and pass a Government Electrical Inspectorate inspection before the supply is connected, which is another reason this is not a corner to cut.
Who should do it
None of this is DIY work. GFCI protection, a properly sized and grounded circuit, fittings rated for the damp and a shower heater connected safely are all licensed-electrician jobs, both for your safety and so the work passes inspection. What you can do is notice the warning signs, an outlet in the bathroom with no GFCI buttons, a light fitting rusting over the shower, a shower heater nobody is sure was wired properly, and get them looked at.
