Why Does My Water Pump Keep Tripping the Breaker?

A water pump tripping the breaker is a common headache, and the most useful clue, as with an air conditioner or a water heater, is when it trips. But a pump has a couple of failure modes the other appliances do not, and in Jamaica one of them is especially common.

What the timing tells you

If the breaker goes the instant the pump starts, that usually means a short or a ground fault: shorted motor windings, water-damaged insulation leaking current to ground, a failed start capacitor, or damaged wiring along the run. Pumps live around water, so ground faults are a real risk.

If it runs for a while and then trips, the story is usually strain or heat: something making the motor work too hard until it overheats, like a clogged impeller, seized bearings, or a supply that is sagging.

The pump-specific culprits

Three causes are particular to pumps, and worth checking for.

The first is the pressure switch. This is the switch that turns the pump on and off with the tank pressure, and its contacts can burn or corrode, or it can fail to cut out, leaving the pump running non-stop until it overheats and trips. It is a common cause and a fixable one.

The second is dry-running. If the pump loses its prime, the tank empties or the supply is blocked, it can run with no water moving through it, which makes it overheat and can wreck its own seals and impeller before the breaker steps in.

The third is the one we see most on Jamaican installs: the long run and voltage drop. A pump out by the tank, fed through a long, undersized cable, gets low voltage by the time the power reaches it. To do the same work on low voltage it draws more current, runs hot, and trips. Do not keep resetting it

The usual rule applies, and doubly so for an immediate trip. A pump that trips the moment it starts is usually shorted or leaking to ground, around water, so do not keep forcing the breaker back on.
