Wiring a Garage: Circuits, Outlets and Safety

The garage is the room most people treat as electrically casual, and it is the one that least deserves it. It is a damp-floored workshop where you handle power tools standing on bare concrete, often with a chest freezer full of food humming away in the corner, and sometimes a car charging in the future. The two things that make a garage safe and useful are the same two that get skipped: proper GFCI protection on the outlets, and the right dedicated circuits for what actually runs in there.

GFCI on every garage outlet

The defining rule for a garage is that every receptacle should be GFCI protected. The reason is the floor. Concrete, especially the damp concrete of a Jamaican garage, is a far better path to ground than a dry timber floor, so a fault in a drill or a sander you are holding has somewhere to go: through you. A GFCI watches for that leakage and cuts the power in a fraction of a second. In a room where you handle metal tools on a conductive floor, that is not a nicety, it is the thing that keeps a faulty tool from being your last.

The freezer trap

Here is the one that catches people out. A chest freezer in the garage, plugged into a GFCI outlet, can nuisance-trip it quietly, and you find out days later when you lift the lid to spoiled meat and a smell you will not forget. It is a real and common loss. The answer is not to remove the protection, but to give the freezer a properly chosen dedicated circuit so it holds reliably, and to keep an eye on it. If you run a freezer in the garage, it should not be sharing a GFCI outlet with the tools and the work light, where every trip takes it down too.

Dedicated circuits for tools, and lights on their own line

A garage should have at least one dedicated 20-amp circuit for its outlets, and the bigger tools want more than that. A table saw, a compressor or a welder pulls hard, and each really wants its own circuit so it is not tripping the breaker or starving everything else when it spins up. Just as important, the lighting should be on a separate circuit from the outlets. You do not want a tool tripping the breaker to plunge you into darkness with a blade still spinning. Lights on their own line is a small detail that matters the first time it saves you.

Planning for an EV charger

If an electric vehicle is anywhere in your future, the garage is where it charges, and a car charger is a heavy dedicated load, usually on its own 240-volt circuit much like a range or a water heater. Even if you are not buying one yet, it is worth knowing what it will need, because running the circuit while a garage is being rewired is far cheaper than coming back to do it later. Plan the space and the panel capacity now and the future install is simple.

The Jamaica angle, and the inspection

Jamaican garages do double duty as workshops, laundries and storage, often with that freezer and sometimes a standby generator, all in a humid, damp-floored space. That makes the GFCI protection and the dedicated circuits more important here, not less. And as with any new or rewired circuits, the work should be done to standard and pass a Government Electrical Inspectorate inspection before the supply is connected, so a garage rewire is a proper job, not a weekend bodge.

Who should do it

Running new circuits, fitting GFCI protection, wiring dedicated lines for tools or a freezer and installing an EV charger are licensed-electrician work, for your safety and so the job passes inspection. What you can do is notice the warning signs: garage outlets with no GFCI buttons, a freezer sharing a circuit with the power tools, one outlet feeding the whole workshop through extension leads, or lights that die whenever a tool trips. Do garage outlets need to be GFCI protected?

Yes. Essentially every receptacle in a garage should be GFCI protected, because the concrete floor, especially when damp, is a good path to ground. It is the single most important part of wiring a garage.
