What Size Wire and Breaker Does a Refrigerator Need?

A refrigerator barely sips power, so this is not a story about heavy wire and big breakers. The circuit

The trouble is that a compressor’s startup surge can fool an older GFCI into thinking it has detected a fault, so the GFCI trips for no real reason. With a fridge, that nuisance trip is the worst case: silent power loss and spoiled food.

The answer is not to rip out protection that the code requires. It is to put the fridge on its own dedicated circuit and use a good, modern GFCI, which have much better filtering and are far less prone to these false trips.
