A ceiling fan is the odd one out in this whole series. Every other appliance we have covered is about handling a heavy load. A ceiling fan barely uses any power at all, so the breaker is almost a non-issue. The thing that actually matters, and the thing people get dangerously wrong, is not the wire. It is what holds the fan on the ceiling.
The electrical side, which is the easy part
A ceiling fan sips power. A 52-inch fan pulls only around 90 to 100 watts on its highest speed, roughly one amp, and even with its lights on the whole fixture is a small load. So a fan runs happily on an ordinary 15-amp lighting circuit with 14-gauge wire, the same circuit your room lights are on. There is no need for a dedicated circuit.
The one wiring wrinkle is control. If you want to switch the fan and its light separately from the wall, you need an extra conductor in the cable, so 14-3 wire runs to the switch instead of plain 14-2. And use a proper fan speed control rather than an ordinary light dimmer, because a standard dimmer can hum, overheat or damage a fan motor.
The part that actually matters: the box
Here is the real story. A ceiling fan has to hang from a UL-listed, fan-rated electrical box, not a standard light-fixture box. This is not a nice-to-have; it is in the code, and it is a safety matter.
A normal light box is designed to hold a few pounds of dead weight, a light fitting that just sits there. A ceiling fan is a different problem entirely: it has real weight, and it spins, so it adds constant vibration and movement on top of that weight. Hang a fan from a standard light box and over time it works the box loose, until one day a spinning fan comes down off the ceiling. A fan-rated box, braced properly to the ceiling joists, is built to take that weight and motion. Any fan, and certainly any over about 35 pounds, needs one.
If you are retrofitting a fan where there is no attic access above, there are tension-bar braces that feed through the ceiling hole and clamp between the joists, giving you a solid anchor without opening the ceiling. The point is that the support has to be real, fixed to the structure, not just screwed to a thin box.
Wobble is a warning
A fan that wobbles is often telling you the box or the mounting is not solid. A little of it can be balance, but persistent wobble on a heavy fan is worth taking seriously, because the mounting is what stands between the fan and the floor. When to call us
Swapping a light for a fan often means changing the box to a fan-rated one and possibly running a new conductor for separate switching, which is more than a like-for-like fixture swap.
