Grid-Tie, Hybrid and Off-Grid Solar Explained

Shop for solar in Jamaica and you will hear three terms thrown around: grid-tie, hybrid and off-grid. They sound technical, but the difference really comes down to one question: what happens when the power goes out. Get that straight and the rest falls into place. Here is the plain version.

Grid-tie: the simplest, and the one that surprises people

A grid-tie system is just panels and an inverter, no battery. The panels make power, the inverter turns it into the kind your house uses, you run on it during the day, and any surplus goes to the grid for a net billing credit. It is the cheapest and simplest setup, and it cuts your bill.

Here is the part that catches people out. When JPS goes down, a grid-tie system shuts off too, even in bright sunshine. That is not a fault, it is a required safety feature called anti-islanding: the system must stop feeding power so it cannot electrocute a lineman working to restore the supply. The result is that a plain grid-tie system gives you no backup at all. If the only thing you want is a smaller bill and your supply is fairly steady, grid-tie is fine. If you went solar partly to ride out the outages, it will disappoint you.

Hybrid: solar plus a battery, and the sweet spot here

A hybrid system is a grid-tie system with a battery added and a smarter inverter running the show. Through the day the panels power the house and charge the battery. When the grid drops, the system switches over to the battery almost instantly and keeps your essentials running, while the grid-tie part still earns you credits when you have surplus. You get the bill savings and the backup.

It costs more than plain grid-tie and the install is more involved, but in Jamaica, where the power goes as often as it does, hybrid is what most homes actually want. It is the honest answer for anyone who says they want solar “so the lights stay on.” How big a battery you need comes down to what you want to keep running, which is the heart of battery backup sizing.

Off-grid: no utility at all

An off-grid system has no connection to JPS. The panels and a battery bank carry the whole property, often with a generator as a backstop for long cloudy stretches. Because nothing comes from the grid, the system has to be sized for your full load with margin, which makes it the biggest and most expensive of the three.

Off-grid makes sense in one main situation: when the grid does not reach you, or reaching it would cost a fortune, like a remote property up a mountain or deep in the country. For most homes with a perfectly good JPS connection at the road, off-grid is overkill, and hybrid gives you the independence you actually want for less.

Which one is right for you

It comes down to what you are trying to get. If you only want to cut the bill and your supply is steady enough, grid-tie does it cheapest. Doing it to standard

Whichever type you choose, grid-tied and hybrid solar must be done to standard and pass a Government Electrical Inspectorate inspection before the supply is connected. The wiring, the inverter setup and the protection all have to be right, both to pass that check and to keep your home and the people on the line safe.
